Welcome to "High Fives" the personal column of our ace Director of Football "Magic Mike".
Magic Mike's football credentials are first class. Last season he handily beat the Beeb’s expert tipster “Lawro” who never got a look in after Magic took an early lead at the start of the 2008/09 season.
A good number of our players were rescued by Magic’s tips in our Five Lives scheme which automatically gives you his tips, up to five times during the season, should you forget to enter them yourself. Magic Mike's canny inside knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of players and teams, combined with a passion for getting it right, is what you need to make an impact in this game. It also means you're going to have to be at your best to outdo him.

previous predictions -
FA Cup 4th Round.... Round 22A.... Round 22.... Round 21.... FA Cup 3rd Round.... Round 20
Portsmouth vs. West Ham United at Fratton Park. A massive game for both clubs; Pompey still have their monetary woes and there now looks little time to resolve them before the transfer window slams shut at the end of January. Portsmouth have been bottom of the league for most of the season and will surely need a result and to avenge the 2-0 defeat they suffered at Upton Park in early December to maintain their survival hopes.
The Hammers have found White Knights in the of David Sullivan Gold and David Gold the ex Birmingham owners. From having a zero transfer budget , the Hammers now supposedly in the running to bring Ruud Van Nistelrooy back to the Premier League. What a scoop that would be for the Hammers. The Hammers have found Gold at the end of the rainbow it seems.
Magic predicts: Portsmouth 1 - West Ham United 2
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Liverpool at Molineux. Wolves had a reasonable December but have lost their last 3 league games, which included a 2-0 reversal at Anfield. Mick McCarthy’s side currently stand just outside the relegation places separated only by goal difference and look set to be involved in the relegation scrap through to the end of the season.
Rafa Benitez has been in the media spotlight because of Liverpool’s poor season but his injury- hit side have shown a dogged determination in their last 2 matches , a battling draw at Stoke and excellent home victory over Spurs. Liverpool lie just 1 point adrift of 4th place and that final Champions League place is still very much up for grabs. Liverpool might have been short on quality so far this year but no one can question the commitment and as wounded animal, Liverpool might just yet strike back.
Magic predicts: Wolverhampton Wanderers 0 - Liverpool 2
Bolton Wanderers vs. Burnley at the Reebok Stadium. Owen Coyle soon comes up against his old employers in another vital 6 pointer. Coyle will certainly know the strengths and weaknesses of the Burnley squad as he looks to plot a winning course for Bolton today. Bolton are still looking for their first Premier League points under Coyle’s leadership and a win would see them move ahead of Burnley in the league standings.
Brian Laws got his managerial career at Burnley to a difficult start with a visit to Old Trafford. Burnley battled hard in that game and the 3-0 defeat belied how difficult they made things for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. Laws has another difficult but potentially more winnable game than last time out and although he is new to the job he will quickly find the pressure in the Premier League is relentless.
Magic predicts: Bolton Wanderers 2 - Burnley 1
Tottenham Hotspur vs. Fulham at White Hart Lane. Harry Redknapp will have been disappointed with his side’s performance in their last 2 league games which yielded just 1 point and yet Tottenham remain in 4th place. Tottenham could have opened a gap on their rivals for that 4th spot with better results. In truth Spurs were very flat in both games. The Spurs faithful will be demanding a higher tempo performance for the London derby against Fulham.
The Cottagers go into the game against Spurs still with injury concerns to Brede Hangeland and last week the influential Clint Dempsey was injured to give Roy Hodgson further problems as his side are still involved in 3 competitions. Fulham haven’t won in their last 4 matches but they haven’t been playing badly.
The last game between the sides finished as a goalless draw and expect todays game to very tight as well
Magic predicts: Tottenham Hotspur 1 - Fulham 1
Aston Villa vs. Arsenal at Villa Park Aston Villa reached their first Wembley cup final in 10 years and an opportunity for Villa to lift their first domestic trophy in 14 years. Their league form though has taken a dip which began with a 3-0 loss at the Emirates over the Christmas period. Until then, Aston Villa had forced their way to a Champions league spot but now find themselves tailing Spurs , Manchester City and Liverpool. Martin O’Neill knows his side needs a result against Arsenal otherwise it looks like this season will follow the last, where Villa fell away on the run-in.
Arsene Wenger’s men took over in the top spot over Chelsea following last week’s 4-2 victory over Bolton. It just goes to show how quickly things can turn around in football as in November Arsenal were being written-off as title contenders. Cesc Fabregas has been a key player for Arsenal this season. He has added goals to his game more this season and last time out against Villa ,he came off the bench in coming back from an injury lay-off to score 2 vital goals and change the course of the game.
A tight game can be expected but an in-form Arsenal can be hard to hold.
Magic predicts: Aston Villa 1 - Arsenal 2
Chelsea vs. Birmingham City at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea were held to a goalless draw by Birmingham and given a real test. They are still without their African contingent but still turned in a majestic performance against Sunderland and will be looking for the same again.
Birmingham are unbeaten in 12 and will go to no tougher place than Stamford Bridge to keep the run alive. Alex McLeish’s side will be eyeing the outside possibility that they could yet challenge for the 4th league spot and is in the market to add to his squad in the transfer window.
Chelsea may find Birmingham difficult to breakdown but on form and with home advantage they should end Birmingham’s unbeaten sequence.
Magic predicts Chelsea 1 - Birmingham City 0
Blackburn Rovers vs. Wigan Athletic at Ewood Park. Sam Allardyce’s side just missed out on a Carling Cup final appearance when they narrowly lost to Aston Villa. Now all that is left for the season is for Blackburn to preserve their Premier League status. Rovers took a big step towards safety with a 2-0 win over Fulham in their last league outing at Ewood Park. A win over Wigan would move them to mid-table.
Wigan had a crucial away win over Wolves in their last game and now face another away-day 6 pointer. Roberto Martinez’s side completely outplayed a disappointing Wolves side and will be looking to continue in the same vein against Blackburn. 3 points would also take Wigan closer to mid-table safety and move them ahead of Blackburn in the league standings.
Magic predicts: Blackburn Rovers 1 - Wigan Athletic 1
Everton vs. Sunderland at Goodison Park. David Moyes will be looking for an end of season push to lift Everton into the top half of the league. Everton look to be back to some of their best form and in their last game they became only the 3rd team this season to defeat Manchester City. Moyes has offloaded the on loan Brazilian, Jo and has secured the temporary services of Landon Donavon.
Sunderland will be hoping to wipe the memories of the loss to Chelsea from their minds but will face another stern test in the shape of the in-form Toffees. The Black Cats are now 8 games without a win that stretches back to a November victory over Arsenal but Steve Bruce will be hoping that his strike partnership of Darren Bent and Kenwyne Jones can unlock Everton’s defence.
Magic predicts: Everton 2 - Sunderland 1 Banker
